The Sons of God

I John 3:1a  Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God:....

What manner of love expresses a superlative. Something that is beyond our comprehension. How do I comprehend a God who would offer Himself in payment for the sins of a race who rejected Him (Acts 20:20; Rev. 1:5). What is there about myself that He would love me? I can’t think of anything.

I John 4:10  Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

A son has the characteristics of his father.

People who remember my father tell me that I look like him, talk and walk like him, and even preach like him. All of which I take as a compliment, of course. I carry the DNA of my father. Even though he is long passed, our relationship can be proven by a simple blood test.

We were not born with God’s DNA.

We were conceived in sin and shaped in iniquity (Ps. 51:5). In John 8:44 Jesus told some Pharisees, “Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do.....”.

We carried the DNA of the devil.

Ephesians 2:3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

However, when we responded to gospel, a miraculous transplant was performed (Ro. 6:3-8) in a procedure that medical science can’t duplicate. Our spiritual DNA was changed. We now carry the DNA of our heavenly Father. We are now partakers of His Divine nature (II Peter 1:4). We are a new creation in Christ Jesus.

II Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man [be] in Christ, [he is] a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

I Corinthians 6:11 And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Just as I reflect the attributes of my earthly father, it is only natural that I show the attributes of my heavenly father. Of course the devil will try to hinder, but our relationship was ended when I bowed at the cross of Jesus. If  I do that which I know to do, it renders him powerless. That part is up to me.

Ephesians 4:24  And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Ephesians 6:11  Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Colossians 3:10  And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:

Colossians 3:12  Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Colossians 3:14  And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Because we are sons, we have an inheritance.

My earthly father was not able to leave an inheritance behind, but the inheritance that awaits me is indescribable and unlimited (I Cor. 2:9). What could be bigger than spending eternity with our Lord and Savior?

Next Week:

I John 3:1b ..... therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

Somebody Has Said
That only is worth my having which I can have forever. That only is worth my grasping which death cannot tear out of my hand. - C.H. Spurgeon
