Casting All of Our Cares Upon Him

I Peter 5:7  Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Every now and then,  after we’ve needlessly carried our burdens and wrestled with life’s perplexities, a light suddenly shines and we realize that all of our anxiety has been for nought. We struggle and try to find answers, when the answer to every situation in life was provided at the cross. Jesus suffered for our grief and sorrow. He was wounded for our transgression, bruised for our iniquities, chastised that we might have mental peace, and by His stripes we are healed.

Isaiah 53:4 ¶  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

That which Isaiah described above covers every condition or situation in life. So why do we forget? Why do we have to be reminded that Jesus bore it all on the cross? Why do we fail to recognize that by holding on to our burdens, we are saying in effect, “I can handle this all by myself, Jesus.”

Years before Jesus came, the Lord asked the people of Israel: “Why do you spend money for that which is not bread and labor for that which does not satisfy?

Isaiah 55:2  Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not?

The answer to that is the same today as it was then.

Isaiah 55:3  Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David

We read in Matthew 11 where Jesus denounced several sinful cities who had rejected Him. His heart was heavy and He cried out in grief:

Matthew 11:28  Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
29  Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.
30  For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

We have His promise that He will never deny anyone who comes to Him.

John 6:37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

He demonstrated His care for the whole world during His life on earth. We find no place where He ever turned away an earnest seeker. He gave life to the outcast such as the lepers (Luke 7:22) and to those taken in the deepest sin (John 8:11) . When Jarius requested that He come and pray for his daughter, Jesus went with him immediately. However on the way He was aware that a sick women had touched the hem of His garment.  He stopped and answered the poor women’s prayer on the spot.(Mark 5:22-34). He bore no grudge to those who had denied and deserted Him at the cross. Rather, He promised to be with them, and us forever, by the power of His abiding Spirit.

Psalms 116:2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon [him] as long as I live.

Sometimes we hold on to our burden because we know that we have missed the mark. We are given the answer to that situation in the Parable of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32). See Parable of the Prodigal (Lost) Son.

1John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

He knew us before we were completely formed in our mother’s womb (Psalms 139:16). He has our names in His book of remembrance (Malachi 3:16), and He has promised that He would never leave or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).   When I don’t hear from one of my grown children for a period of time, I grow concerned and sense that something is wrong. When we finally talk, it is a pleasure to hear their voice. I think that God feels the same way about us. When our children ask for help, we are quick to respond. In Matthew 7:11, Jesus told us that ,we being evil know how to give good gifts to our children. He then asks, “ how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give good things to them that ask him?”

Jesus knows the felling of our infirmities and temptations (Hebrews 4:15). I believe that He is often grieved when He sees us floundering about and trying to solve problems that He has already taken care of on the cross. I believe He is also joyous when He hears His children cry out, “Abba Father.”  Abba is equivalent "dad" or "papa" in English. He's waiting to hear from us all.
