God, The Rock of Our Salvation It was from a Rock that water came forth when Moses smote it (Exodus 17:7), and also when he spoke to it (Numbers 20:8). 1 Corinthians 10:4 reminds us that the Rock that followed Israel through the desert was Christ. “Rock” is used as a metaphor for something that is stable and enduring and can stand the test of time, such as The Rock of Gibraltar. It has been there since creation and will be there until the end of time, unless the Lord decides otherwise. Deuteronomy 32:4 [He is] the Rock, his work [is] perfect: for all his ways [are] judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right [is] he. 1 Samuel 2:2 states that there is none holy as the Lord and that there is no Rock like our God. 2 Samuel states that God is our Rock, our shield, our high tower and refuge. He is our Savior and the horn of our salvation who saves us from violence. Thus our trust is in Him. Israel had a very short memory. They would forget the blessings and promises of God and end up in trouble because of their disobedience. They would lust after the things and practices of the evil nations that surrounded them God would deliver and restore only to see them repeat the same pattern over and over. Some of us are like that, aren’t we? Deuteronomy 32:15 ¶ But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered [with fatness]; then he forsook God [which] made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation. Moses had to remind these people that the things and nations that they were lusting after were inferior to the Rock and God of their salvation. Deuteronomy 32:31 For their rock [is] not as our Rock, even our enemies themselves [being] judges. Not to be political but: Today we have an ongoing circus all around us, otherwise known as the presidential primaries. Every candidate has a plan, but with the exception of one, God seems to be excluded from their plans. Jesus told us that in the end times there would be distress of nations with perplexity (Luke 21:25). The best laid plans of man are thwarted by war and natural disaster as we’ve seen in the last few years. When this happens aren’t you thankful for your Rock. Psalms 27:5 For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. Aren’t we thankful for the solid Rock upon which we have been established? 2 Samuel 22:47 The LORD liveth; and blessed [be] my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation. Do we remember when we were sinking in the miry clay? Psalms 40:2 He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock, [and] established my goings. Jesus told the story of two men who built houses. The weather was so nice that one man neglected his foundation and built his house on the sand. He probably finished quickly and things were pretty good for a while. Then the storms came and you know the rest of the story. The other fellow dug deep and built his house upon the Rock. The wind and the rain couldn’t phase it because of his deep foundation. Matthew 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. We are citizens of this earth and we should be good citizens, but we have an heavenly citizenship that supercedes anything that this world has to offer. We must remember that we are pilgrims and strangers in this world (Hebrews 11:13; 1 Peter 2:11) and that we are looking for that heavenly city (Hebrews 11:10). Philippians 3:20 For our conversation (citizenship) is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: (parenthethes mine) We are also members of the church of Christ, built upon the Rock of His own self and which he purchased with His own blood. Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Regardless of all the world's problems and all the solutions that men propose, we only have One whose ways are perfect and who is a Rock of truth. Our Rock is Holy, He is our shield and high tower and He will never fail us. When the storms come and the winds blow, we know that man doesn’t have the solution regardless of their best intentions. But we know who does. Psalms 61:2 From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. Keep Looking Up!
