The Spirit of the Lord is Upon Me

After our Lord’s baptism, Jesus was driven by the Spirit into the wilderness (Mark 1:12)  where He endured  forty days of temptation by Satan. Being full of the Holy Ghost, He returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:14). He taught in the local synagogues and was well received by folks throughout the region. He was yet to do His first miracle but when Jesus taught, people listened. He didn’t drone on in the manner of the scribes and pharisees, but rather  spoke with authority (Matthew 7:29). This all changed when He visited His hometown of Nazareth (Luke 4:16). Familiarity does breed contempt.

Jesus was asked to read the portion of scripture that would be read in all the synagogues on that particular Sabbath. He read from Isaiah 61:1 which is repeated in the gospel of Luke.

Luke 4:18  The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19  To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

Jesus finished by saying that they were hearing this prophecy being literally fulfilled with their own ears.

Luke 4:21  And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

In other words Jesus was claiming to be the promised Messiah. He may have stirred some with His powerful words but this they could not accept. The local carpenter’s son whom they considered to be illegitimate claiming to be God in the flesh? Not likely!

These folks knew the scriptures or at least they knew the letter but not the Spirit in which the scripture was written. They were looking for One who would fulfill Isaiah 11:2-4. One who would have the spirit of wisdom and understanding, counsel and might, knowledge and the fear of the Lord. He would judge the poor and the meek with righteousness and smite and slay the wicked (Isaiah 11;2-4). Jesus just didn’t come up to their expectations. They did not consider that He would qualify as the Servant of the Lord who would bring judgment to the gentiles and establish His law and justice in the earth (Isaiah 42:1:4). Jesus may have been a good speaker, but He did not qualify in their estimation to be the One who would come with the anointing of the Spirit of the Lord, speaking the word of God with the tongue of the learned (Isaiah 50;4, 59:21).

They realized that Jesus was claiming to be the One spoken of in Psalms 45.

Psalms 45:6 ¶  Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
7  Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

Here is a quote from the Pulpit Commentary concerning Psalms 45.    “And the excellence of Christ is not only human but Divine, the glory of God shines in Him. He is the perfect King because He is the perfect man; and He is the perfect man because, ‘in Him dwelt all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.’ His perfections, therefore, not only command the homage of all hearts, but they are unchanging and unchangeable as the glory of God.”

So what does this mean to us?

1 John 2:20-21,27 tells us that we have receiving an unction and an anointing from the Holy One. This anointing teaches us all things and keeps us abiding in the truth.

When we like Jesus have been anointed with the Spirit of God,  we will speak the words of God. Like Jesus we will speak life rather than death. We will be aware of the poor and downtrodden, those who are crushed in spirit and those bound in chains of darkness. We will be able to speak words that will set these captives free.

We have all received a commission to preach the gospel of life to the whole world Mark 16:15-18. Everybody won’t receive us, just as they didn’t all receive Jesus. However those who believe the words that we speak will  respond.  Jesus promised that if they would believe and be baptized they would be saved, those who don’t will be damned.

What an awesome charge and responsibility we have been given. We can only carry it out when we are fully yielded to the Spirit of God. When we are full of the Holy Ghost, and allow ourselves to be driven by the Spirit, we will walk in the power of the Spirit and accomplish the works of the Spirit.
