Growing in Jesus II Peter 3:18 But grow in grace, and [in] the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him [be] glory both now and for ever. Amen. We all long for the righteousness of Christ, but some of us know that we fall far below the standard that He set for us while on this earth. The Galatians had this problem also. They were saved, but Paul felt that they were not fully formed in Christ. Galatians 4:19 ¶ My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you, Two scriptures that I like to pair together are Romans 1:16-17 and II Corinthians 3:18. They tell us that the righteousness of God is revealed by the gospel of Christ from faith to faith and as we behold the glory of the Lord we are changed into His image from glory to glory. Romans 1:16 ¶ For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God .......... 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. II Corinthians 3:18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, [even] as by the Spirit of the Lord. Paul told us in Philippians 3:10 that in spite of having been caught up to heaven and having divine revelation, he didn’t feel that he had arrived. He cried out, “Oh that I might know Him and the power of His resurrection!” The only way to know Him in this way was to share in His sufferings and be made conformable to His death. Quite often we hear about the power and prefer to forget about conforming. Philippians 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; It is God’s plan for us that we be conformed to the image of Christ. Romans 8:29 ¶ For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Jesus is the express image of God’s person (Hebrews 1:3). The image of Christ is simply the revelation of God Almighty. Martin Luther expressed it something like this, “Whatever you want to know of God, look at Jesus.” Colossians tells us that all the fulness of God i.e. everything that comprises God’s being dwells in Jesus. Colossians 1:19 For it pleased [the Father] that in him should all fulness dwell; Colossians 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Ephesians 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. When I look at Jesus in the gospels, I see mercy, love, compassion, sinless perfection, and much more, much of which I lack. I have a long way to go, but Jesus left a promise that if I would hunger and thirst after righteousness, I would be filled. Of course if I don’t hunger and thirst, nothing will improve. It's up to me. Matthew 5:6 Blessed [are] they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. John tells us that if we keep God’s word, His love will be perfected in us and then we have the assurance of our salvation. 1John 2:3 ¶ And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 5. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. Colossians 1:10, 3:9-10 and Ephesians 4:24 reminds us that we have put on the new man which is created in the image of God in righteousness and true holiness. It is my desire and I'm sure it is your's also to forsake everything of this world that would keep me from the goal of conforming to the image of Christ. I desire to hear Him say, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joy of thy Lord (Matthew 25:21). I'm sure that is your desire also and I look forward to the day that we all be rejoice together at the throne of God. I feel that it won't be much longer.
