Remission of Sins in the Name of Jesus

As we stated last week, Jesus commanded that repentance and remission (forgiveness) of sins should be preached in His name (Luke 24:44-49) beginning at Jerusalem. Also, the believers were to wait in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Ghost.

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Remission or forgiveness of sins is accomplished by water baptism in the name of Jesus. The Amplified Bible  ©  states it thus, “in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of and release from your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus said that one must be born of the water and the spirit to enter the kingdom of heaven (John 3:5). The apostle Paul was commanded to arise and be baptized, washing away his sins, while calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 22:16). Peter stated that the act of baptism saved us (I Peter 3:21).

Colossians 2:11-12 tells us that when we are buried with Him (Jesus) in baptism our hearts are circumcised, causing us to put off the sins of our flesh. (It is worth noting that the person who refused Old Testament circumcision  was cut off (Genesis 17:14). Likewise New Testament scripture makes no provision for the believer who is not baptized.)  We are raised  from the  waters of baptism by faith in the operation of God who raised Jesus from the dead. In other words, we simply obey God's word, and He will do whatever work He needs to accomplish in us.

Romans 6:3-6 tells us that when we were baptized into Jesus Christ we were baptized into His death. Just as Christ was raised from the dead, we rise to walk in newness of life. If we have been planted in the likeness of His death, we will also be raised in the likeness of His resurrection.

Repentance, remission of sins and the reception of the Holy Ghost were intended to be one integral step. We note that after Peter's sermon at Pentecost 3000 souls were added to the church that day. I believe that when a person is convicted of their sin and  they make a conscience decision to alter their course, that this is repentance.  I also believe that water baptism is a continuation of the act of repentance. It should not be delayed. The baptism of the Holy Ghost is instantly available for the asking to the baptized believer. God did not intend to have three different groups of believers in the church, i.e.  believers, water baptized believers and spirit filled believers.  It didn't happen that way in the book of Acts and it shouldn't be that way today. I remember the old timers saying that in the Pentecostal revival of the early 1900s it was the rule rather than the exception for  people to come out of the baptismal waters speaking in other tongues just like they did on the day of Pentecost.

Jesus stated in Mark 16:15-18 that the believer that was baptized would be saved, and the unbeliever would be damned  (Strong words from the Master, worth considering?). A baptismal formula is not recorded , but looking at the context, isn't it logical that if the baptized believer is empowered to do mighty works such as healing the sick and casting out demons in the name of Jesus, that they were first baptized in His name?

Matthew 28:19 commands water baptism in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. We note that these are all titles pertaining to God, and that baptism was commanded in a singular name. The name "Jesus" is derived from the name "I AM" that God pronounced to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:15).  It means, "the Lord Jehovah has become our salvation.”  God stated that "I AM"  would be His name forever and His memorial to all generations. Jesus claimed this name by stating, before Abraham was I AM (John 8:58). Jesus also  said that He had manifested the Father's name to those who had been given to Him (John 17:6). Lastly the Holy Ghost, the Comforter was promised to be sent by the Father in the name of Jesus (John 14:26).

Considering that after His resurrection Jesus spoke to His apostles of things pertaining to the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3) and that the apostles baptized in the name of Jesus throughout the book of Acts (Acts 8:15-16, 10:47-48, 19:4-5), isn't it logical to believe that they got their instructions from Jesus Himself?

Considering that: Colossians 1:19 tells us that it pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell, and Colossians 2:9 tells us that all the fullness of the Deity dwells in Him bodily.

Matthew 28:18 tells us that all power in heaven and earth has been given to Jesus, and Acts 4:12 tells us that there is no other name given under heaven whereby we must be saved, isn't it logical that the singular baptismal name of Matthew 28:19 is "Jesus?"

Humor
The stockbroker's secretary answered his phone one morning. "I'm sorry,"she said, "Mr. Bradford's on another line."

"This is Mr. Ingram's office," the caller said. "We'd like to know if he's bullish or bearish right now."

"He's talking to his wife," the secretary replied. "Right now I'd say he's sheepish."

Somebody Has Said
“Some people do not like to hear much of repentance; but I think it is so necessary that if I should die in the pulpit, I would desire to die preaching repentance, and if out of the pulpit I would desire to die practicing it.” - Matthew Henry
