My Thoughts on the Life of Christ, from His Baptism to His Ascension.

In writing this week's devotional, my mind goes back quite a few years to a little store front church in Flint, Michigan. I can hear the folks vigorously sing an old hymn of the church.

  When the redeemed are gathering in,
Washed like snow and free from all sin.
How we will shout and how we will sing,
When the redeemed are gathering in

  Many who were singing on that day have passed on. Some were infirm, they won’t be infirm then. Some had limited mental capacity, they won’t be limited then.  Some were poor, but they’ll be rich then. We all had a hope and an expectation that Jesus could come at any moment. Sadly, that urgency does not seem to be nearly as prevalent in the church today.

Revelation 1:5  And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
6  And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
7  Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen.
8  I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.

The writer of the text above, most likely  the apostle John, saw One whom he recognized, as being like the son of man. However now He was different. All of the Deity was shining forth from His visible form. He heard Him once more claim the unutterable name of God, "I AM" He remembered that while walking in His earthly ministry Jesus had said, I am the way, the truth, the life, the door, the resurrection and the life, and had claimed to be God Himself when He told some that you would die in their sins because they refused to believe that He was God among them (John 8:24). He remembered that once when Jesus claimed the name “I AM,” people tried to stone Him for making Himself God (John 10:33).

He had heard Jesus say that He was leaving, but that He would return, so that we could be with Him in the place He was preparing for us.

John 14:3  And if I go and prepare a place for you,  I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be may be also.

He remembered Jesus talking of His future kingdom and all that would transpire before it was fully established. There would be war, famine, pestilence and plague. These would only be the beginning of sorrows and yet His future coming was firmly established.

  Luke21:25  And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring;

Matthew 24:6  And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

He had seen Him at His ascension when the angels proclaimed:

Acts 1:10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
Acts 1:11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

John had no doubt read the writng of his fellow apostle Paul who wrote of putting off the bonds of mortality and corruption and being instantly caught up and changed into the image of the One who shed His blood for us. He looked forward to the day when he would no longer have limited knowledge, but would see his Master face to face.

1 Thesolonians 4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

  John listened as the glorified Jesus told of the day that men, many of whom had great power on this earth, cried out for the rocks to fall on them to hide them from the sight of His face and His wrath which was to come.  I don’t want to be in that number.

Revelation 6:15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains;
Revelation 6:16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb:
Revelation 6:17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

  He heard Jesus once more state that He was returning quickly, and he could only cry out, "Come."

Revelation 22:12  And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.

No doubt John wept as He was told of that coming day. No more sorrow, No more pain. No more children dying by disease. No more murder in our streets and no more genocide. We are going to be with our God and all things will be new!

Revelation 21:4  And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.
5  And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful.
6  And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
7  He that overcometh shall inherit all things; and I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

John listened as the One who was speaking  identified Himself.

Revelation 22:16  I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

Oh, what a promise. Oh, what a hope. We will see Him and behold Him face to face. We don’t know what we will be, but we do know that when He appears we will be like Him for we will see Him as He is ( I John 3:2).

And that folks, is just the beginning. We will live with Him forever!

I Thessolonians  4:17  Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.

Many folks cannot understand how we came to have an oil shortage here in America.

Well, there is a very simple answer. Nobody bothered to check the oil.We just did not know we were getting low.The reason for that is purely geographical.Our OIL is located in Alaska, California, Oklahoma and Texas.

  Our DIPSTICKS are located in Washington DC

"Some people think God does not like to be troubled with our constant coming and asking. The way to trouble God is not to come at all." - D. L. Moody
